REYNOSA MEXICO - Steroids and the dangers of using them have been in the headlines for months. Unfortunately, South Texas kids have easy access to them just south of the border. 6 News' Shaun Hegarty went to Mexico to show you just how simple it is to buy steroids. On the busy streets of Reynosa you can find just about everything you need - a dentist's office, fresh fruit on wheels and lots of pharmacies where steroids can be easily bought. We went into local pharmacies asking for three popular drugs: Sustanon 250, Deca-durabolin, more commonly known as deca and Stenox. We were successful on our first try. 6 News: "Do you guys have Sustanon?" Clerk: "Sustanon?" 6 News: "Sustanon." The clerk inside showed me a box with Sustanon in it. 6 News: "Is this a pill or a shot?" Clerk: "Es ampolleta" She's said it's a shot. That was all we could find at this farmacia, so we moved on. At another farmacia we had no trouble finding Sustanon as well as Deca. 6 News: "Is that a pill? I don't know much about it." Clerk: "It's an...injection." 6 News: "Injection, OK." 6 News: "How about deca?" Clerk: "Decabolin?" 6 News: "Yeah...How much does that go for?" Clerk: "$55.32." 6 News: "$55.32, wow. Now is that a pill too or is that an injection?" Clerk: "That's an injection." 6 News: "Injection." The man behind the counter tried to sweeten the deal with a discount. Clerk: "This price is without...discount. With discount it's 20% less." 6 News: "How do I get a discount?" Clerk: "20%" 6 News: "How do you get a discount?" Clerk: "It's... A si es." He said that's the way it is here. Clerk: "When you pay we give you the discount." 6 News: "OK." Clerk: "It's 20% less." 6 news: "Great, OK." Clerk: "In this price." 6 News: "OK. Thank you." So we were left with lots of choices and some special deal offers. At our final stop Sustanon was easy to find. They even let me take it out of the box. There was no shortage of helpful people, even looking at my list to see what he had. Most of the steroids you can find down here are veterinary steroids they're actually meant to treat animals. That's not stopping people from using them and that's what makes them so dangerous. Stenox is one of them, but it was tougher to find. Clerk: "Ese aqui no, apenas un veterinario." 6 News: "Oh, OK, OK." He's referring us to a vet for Stenox - leaving our only roadblock to steroids. Most of those buying the steroids in Mexico are looking to build muscle very quickly. But one local doctor says you're taking more than a health risk when you buy drugs across the border. Some going across the border into Mexico think they will be coming back with steroids, but that's not always the case. "A lot more will even say they're getting nothing. It's a labeled package of steroids, which is a big business along the border towns and they're getting back and there's nothing to it," said Dr. Chad Peters. Sometimes it's just vials of water, not the drugs promised by the Mexican vendor. Back in Corpus Christi, when Carroll coach Lee Yeager isn't arguing a call he's trying to educate his kids about the dangers of those vials. "In high school teaching and coaching sometimes these kids are very vulnerable and they'll do anything to help themselves better on the playing field and definitely that's a bothering thing," Yeager said. "So I would definitely say if it's available that easy, then they're going to try and use them if they can get an advantage." Kids need to be especially careful in Mexico. Because most of the steroids for sale are meant for animals, and are not the proper dosage for an adult - let alone a teenager. "I think the biggest problem with steroids is that people think they can either inject or swallow some pills and all of the sudden they are going to be putting on muscle, it doesn't work," said Dr. Peters. Yeager hopes the message makes it home so parents also heed the warnings about the dangerous drugs. "They don't want to think their kids are doing it but we got to open our eyes to some of these things. A lot of people think their kids can do no wrong," Yeager said. "Everyone's looking for a pill to get big. The same way the general population is looking for a pill or a cure to fatness and it's not out there. You're not going to put muscle on without working out," said Dr. Peters. He said, bottom line, when taking a trip south, stay away from the steroids. "If you're a 15 year old to a 30 year old, you've got tons of hormones going through your body. You don't need to increase them and start screwing up you natural system."
